It‘s the most hotly–hyped game of the year. A star–studded Leicester Square premier; a global advertising campaign to rival a Hollywood blockbuster, breaking more records than Usain Bolt, in what seems like an even quicker time. We‘ll tell you right up front –believe the hype, this game is worth every penny. The line has been drawn in the sand. From here on in this cutting edge soldier shooter is leader of a highly competitive pack. Welcome to the latest benchmark in arcade warfare – a stunning adventure that‘ll have you on the edge of your seat and at times, hardly believing what you‘re seeing.

In typical Modern Warfare style, the theatres of war change in rapid succession. The first 15 minutes of Iraq–based action are worthy of an episode in the esteemed TV drama Generation Kill – riding shotgun on a Humvee through a war torn Iraqi town before being set upon by an army of militants. Civilians will run out of the way, wisps of snaking smoke trails will be your only indication of an impending RPG attack. Blood, bullets, sand and confusion – and all the while you‘ll have a squad of AI comrades fighting, trying and dying in front of your eyes. It‘s warfare at its most spectacular.

From there it‘s a mountain sequence involving an element of snowstorm stealth before a rip roaring snowmobile chase. After that there‘s a much talked about sequence involving the massacre of literally hundreds of civilians in a Russian airport. Disturbing? Yes. Out of context for the game? No. You‘ll need to make up your own mind but to give any further details would be like adding the spoil in ‘spoiler‘. Needless to say after the ‘controversial‘ level we had to just contemplate what we played through. But that‘s a trait of the single player Modern Warfare games – it pushes boundaries and creates a fever pitch of intensity unlike any other shooter.

The single player campaign isn‘t even half the battle. A new Special Ops mode
offers timed missions and campaign scenarios from Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare that you can play solo or local and online co–op.

There‘s a wealth of objectives in the Spec Ops feature. These include killing a certain number of the enemy, racing snowmobiles and moving as quickly as possible between two points (either stealthily or with full guns blazing). Progression unlocks further missions – so there‘s good reason to play through. Although these side quests can be completed as a lone gunman, they really are meant to be worked through co–operatively and do a great job of building up the whole team ethic.

Over on multiplayer and the game offers the same slick experience as before. The longer you play and the more successful you are, the more XP you earn, which in turn unlocks additional weapons and other perks such as added armour or high damage ratio. The multiplayer gameplay has been tweaked rather than overhauled, with different weapon load–outs (including a riot shield that is excellent for strategic team play), and new kill streak rewards offering a level of variety that can switch the flow of a battle in an instant – it‘s amazing how an unexpected assault from a helicopter gunship can ruin the best laid plans.

Criticisms are few and far between. It‘s easy to say that perhaps there hasn‘t been an ‘evolution‘ in gameplay – but like a hand made sport car a connoisseur admires the craftsmanship rather than just the functionality. This title is the best soldier shooter on the market today – offering a truly epic single player campaign a new Spec Ops mission scenario for co–op– efforts and still the most intense and rewarding online multiplayer experience. If you buy one FPS this year, make sure it‘s this one.
