Seven years, seven games – not a bad record for one of Sony‘s most popular double acts. And now everyone‘s favourite time bending twosome make a PS3 exclusive return in Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time – a refinement rather than a major progression on what has gone before, but highly entertaining nonetheless.

The main characters in the series are Ratchet, a lombax (cat–like) mechanic and his robot sidekick Clank, who was originally from a robotic line designed for causing destruction, but accompanies Ratchet due to the robot line‘s assembly computer altering him for purposes of good.

In previous games the player controls Ratchet for the majority of each game, although certain missions will require direct control over Clank. During most other times Clank sits on Ratchet‘s back (in a backpack–like fashion) and is used to provide useful jumping, hovering, and diving abilities through various upgrades.

Things have changed slightly in the latest outing. The game offers a brief summary of the last few instalments to get the gamer up to speed before opening on Ratchet searching the universe for his buddy Clank – who has gone on a quest to discover why he was created. In truth, the story is secondary; the game keeps its tongue firmly in its cheek and doesn‘t take itself seriously. Characters are quirky and OTT lending to the madcap atmosphere. There‘s no po–faced drama in R&C‘s world, the atmosphere is colourful and light.

Time based puzzles where Clank is placed in a room with buttons that need to be activated and a locked door that requires opening, involve you having to work in synchronised harmony with clones of yourself through recording your actions and then playing them back in different sequences. To explain more would spoil one of the most inventive uses of time manipulation we‘ve seen in a videogame, but the basic philosophy is based around using past iterations of yourself in order to progress in the current setting. Needless to say, it works.

Puzzles are once again combined with lengthy, highly polished shooting sequences, filled to the brim with diverse weaponry that upgrades easily through auto XP collection. You never get tired of dispatching bad guys because the combat works so well. There‘s also plenty of space travel, allowing you to land where you choose and engaging in more and more side quests that really expand the main storyline.

The latest outing for R&C is the most accomplished title in the game‘s esteemed history and one that is well worth investigating for both newcomers and Ratchet veterans alike.
